Robotics and Art

Apparently, robotics is something related to technology and industrialization. As a matter of fact, industrialization has a huge influence on our daily life, which brings numerous benefits to us, especially after the First Industrial Revolution, many technologies have been invented by that time and artists are influenced by mechanization as well.

Walter Benjamin has mentioned some of the important relationship between mechanization and art. "An analysis of art in the age of mechanical reproduction must do justice to these relationships, for they lead us to an all-important insight: for the first time in world history, mechanical reproduction emancipates the work of art from its parasitical dependence on ritual" In his perspective,  mechanization has huge influence on art. Previously, art was based on ritual but it changed because of the emerge of photography. Because of the invention of photography, the value of painting will change as well. It also brings tremendous change in world history.

On the other hand, Walter Benjamin also stated how mechanical changes improved art and movie industry. "Mechanical changes of art changes the reaction of the masses towards the art The reactionary attitude toward a Picasso painting changes into the progression reaction toward a Chaplin movie" He addressed how these changes affect the society. He said if there is greater decrease in social significance of art, there will be more criticism and enjoyment of public. Also, individuals tend to affect by mass audience with the regard of the screen,  so it is harder for audience to really enjoyed the art. Additionally, it also promoted the demand for film. Hence, the mechanical changes greatly improved art and movie industry.

Generally, everything in our society is a result of industrialization, such as machine, railways, and steam machine, which are tremendously useful in our life. It is really hard to imagine our life without industrialization. It would definitely create many problems. Hence, I understand how crucial industrialization is and how it improved the technology in our society and beneficial to human. It also proved the intelligence and diligence of human beings.

Math & Art

In the lectures and readings, I have realized some of the crucial connection between mathematics and art. The lecture video has mentioned that computer, science, mathematics and art are closely related. Most of the people claimed that they do not draw well and therefore they do not like art and prefer science and math. Yet, it is not exactly true because theorists found out that human beings actually have talent of both. Fuller indicated that we are all genius but some process de-geniuses them. Additionally, paintings always consist of mathematics such as geometry and generalization. Other than this, from the article of math and music, writer also stated the connection between math and music. We often use computer to transform music. There are actually many simple synthesis technique. In the article of " Vanishing points and looking at art", author has talked about how we looked at art in a mathematics way, such as how we can draw parallel line and vanishing points.

From this piece of art, we can see that art and mathematics have close relations. This is from the article "Vanishing and looking at art". According to the vanishing point theorem, of two or more lines in real world are parellel, but not parellel in the picture, they have same vanishing point. I think this is very useful in our daily life. When we are planning to draw some objects, we have to show the distance between different objects in the picture, which is very challenging. In the following picture, we have to show that the road is getting farther and farther from our point of view. This is how we use math to integrate our drawings.

I have learned that artists often use mathematics to draw their painting, in other words, they put some mathematical element in their painting, which we would not find out before. If we pay attention, we will find out that despite math and art are two complete unrelated criteria. they can still be used in the same piece of art.

Juxtaposition defines as an act placing together with comparison and contrast. Science, art and mathematics are juxtaposition. They are interdependent. For example, we use computer to write and modify music, we often use mathematics to look at art, such as angle, parallel and geometry. These are all related to mathematics. A piece of art consist different criteria of thinking. Artists must have tremendous talent to draw an art with great inspiration. An artists need to integrate their thinking with art and science to create an excellent work.

Two Cultures

Hi, My name is Venus Wang and my major is economics. In my perspective, the idea of two cultures exist in every part of the world. From the writer's view, he stated that the differences between scientists and literal intellectuals inspired him the conception of two cultures. He defined the relationships between scientists and literal intellectuals. " Literary intellectuals at one pole- at the other scientists, and as the most representative, the physical scientists. Between the two, a gulf of mutual incomprehension- sometimes hostility and dislike, but most of all lack of misunderstanding". The way they think is completely different, The non-scientist thought that the scientists are very optimistic, which is really shallow, while scientist literal intellectuals lack of foresight. Optimistic and are two misunderstandings between two cultures.

We may also connect the idea of two differences with something in UCLA campus. For instance, there are numerous field of majors. We can divided them by two large groups, which is science and art. Science apparently consist of biology, physics, chemistry etc. Art consist of history, literature and geography etc. Students from these two groups learned entirely different knowledge and the way they think is different too.

The theory of Two cultures also influence my perspective in my daily life. As an international student from Hong Kong, I experienced different culture in the U.S, Despite the cultures and customs in America are different from Hong Kong, I still enjoyed the living style of both. I will not be hostile or dislike foreign cultures but accept and appreciate. There are also something common between two cultures. Hence, scientists and literal intellectuals can be compatible, as well as difference cultures and races.
